How the random team generator works

This free tool takes any list of names and splits it into fair, balanced teams in seconds. Type or paste your names, choose whether you want a set number of teams or a fixed number of people per team, and hit Generate. The result is a clean set of colored cards you can rename, re-shuffle, copy, share, or print.

Under the hood it uses an unbiased Fisher–Yates shuffle, then deals names out one at a time across the teams like dealing cards. That keeps every team within a single person of the same size — the fairest split the numbers allow.

Two ways to split your list

Number of teams

Pick this when you know how many teams you need — say four relay teams or two trivia squads. Everyone gets distributed as evenly as possible across that many teams.

People per team

Pick this when you care about team size instead — pairs, groups of three, five-a-side. The tool works out how many teams that makes and balances the leftovers.

What happens with odd numbers

Real groups rarely divide cleanly, and that's fine. When there's a remainder, the extra people are handed to the first few teams one at a time, so no team is ever more than one person bigger than another. The tool tags those teams with a small "+1" badge so it's obvious who got the extra spot — no silent imbalance, no lost names.

1344, 3, 3, 3 (Team 1 gets +1)

Avoid repeat pairings

Use the same group week after week? Turn on Avoid repeat pairings. The generator remembers who has already shared a team and tries to keep those people apart on the next shuffle. It's great for classrooms, sports practices, and recurring game nights where you want fresh combinations each time.

Frequently asked questions

How does the random team generator split names fairly?

It shuffles your full list with an unbiased Fisher–Yates shuffle, then deals names out one at a time across the teams. This keeps every team within one person of the same size, so the split is always as even as the numbers allow.

What happens when the names don't divide evenly?

When the count is odd or doesn't divide cleanly, the extra people are spread across the first few teams one at a time. Those teams get one more member, and the tool labels them with a "+1" badge so you can see exactly who got the extra spot.

Can I split into a set number of teams or teams of a fixed size?

Both. Choose Number of teams to split everyone into a fixed count of teams, or choose People per team to make teams of a set size. The tool calculates the rest automatically.

Does it avoid putting the same people together every time?

Yes. Turn on Avoid repeat pairings and the generator remembers who has already been grouped together and tries to keep them apart on the next shuffle. It's ideal for classrooms and recurring game nights.

Can I keep certain people together or apart?

Yes. Open the Constraints panel and list names that must stay together (like best friends or siblings) or must be kept apart, one rule per line with names separated by commas. The generator honors those rules while still shuffling everyone else randomly.

Can I balance teams by skill level?

Yes. Add a number from 1 to 5 after a name, like Alex, 5, then turn on Balance by skill. The tool spreads strong and less experienced players across teams so every team's total skill is as even as possible. Names without a number count as average.

Is the random team picker free and private?

It's completely free with no signup. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored on a server, so your list of names stays private to you.

Can I print the teams for a classroom?

Yes. Use the Print button to get a clean, ink-friendly printout of the teams, with controls and navigation hidden. Great for posting on a board or handing out in class.
